One of the most interesting aspects about Bhutanese culture is their devotion for the Phallus. It all began in the fifthteenth century wtih Lama Drukpa Kunley, who was believed to possess magical powers. With his uncustomary writings and aberrant conduct, he inarguably earned the title of "The Divine Madman"

The Chimi Lhakhang temple was built in honor of the divine madman and is considered to be the temple of fertility. It stands on a round hillock following a half-hour expedition through the rice fields. Several childless women visit the temple to seek blessings.

Phallus wall art at the entrance of the houses is believed to aid fertility, brings good luck and drives away evil spirits. Innovative wooden souvenirs are available in the form of Phallus as well. There are many anecdotes associated with Lhakhang and Drukpa's life that can be deciphered in the temple as the wall decorations and the artifacts testify these tales.
