Constructed by Ngawang Namgyal, 1st Zhabdrung Rinpoche a.k.a. The Great Lama, in 1637–38, Punakha Dzong is the second oldest and second largest dzong in Bhutan; a true sight to behold. It was Namgyal’s residence and his remains are still preserved in the courtyard.

Located in Punakha at the convergence of the two great rivers, Pho Chhu (Father) and Mo Chhu (Mother), the Dzong has great history and cultural significance preserved within its walls. A footbridge set on water takes you to the entrance of the Dzong, with the soothing harmony of flowing water beneath. Inside, there are beautiful murals and carvings on the walls depicting the history of Buddhism.

With the Himalayas in the backdrop, clouds enveloping the surroundings, and rivers flowing on either side, the Dzong and the landscape around make for a perfect postcard view.
